Those who live and work in the Netherlands may have taxes and, in some cases, allowances to deal with. This page sets out your rights but also your obligations when it comes to paying taxes and receiving allowances.
There are various taxes in the Netherlands that you have to pay, depending on your situation. For example, if you work in the Netherlands for a Dutch employer, they will deduct payroll tax from your salary. Your payslip shows your gross and net pay and the taxes and contributions your employer deducts.
You may also have to pay local taxes, such as a levy for waste collection or sewerage. Local tax levels and rules vary from one municipality to another. See the website of the municipality where you live for more information.
Do you live and work in the Netherlands? If so, you can also file tax returns in the Netherlands. Most people receive a letter from the Tax Administration (Belastingdienst) in February asking them to file their returns by May 1. You can file your tax return even if you do not receive a letter. In some cases, you are entitled to have a certain amount refunded by the Tax Administration. You may also have to pay an additional amount after filing your tax return.
For questions about your tax return, you can call the BelastingTelefoon (Tax Hotline) (Dutch or English) on 0800-0543. Many libraries and trade unions can also help you fill in the tax return free of charge. Never give your DigiD to anyone you don't know.
The amount and type of tax you pay depends on your municipality. See the website of the municipality where you live for more information about local taxes.
In the Netherlands, you can claim allowances if your income falls below a certain minimum and you do not have too many assets. In the Netherlands, there is a housing benefit, a healthcare allowance and allowances related to children. See toeslagen.nl for all the conditions of each type of allowance.
You can apply for an allowance via My Allowances on toeslagen.nl. The website is available in both Dutch and English. Do you need help with this? Libraries, trade unions and the local authority can often provide help. See also toeslagen.nl/help.
Important note! Yes. Allowances are an advance payment. Is your home situation changing? For example, because you are earning more, moving house or getting divorced? Or because someone is moving in with you? If so, this may affect the allowances you receive. Report those changes as soon as possible via My Allowances on toeslagen.nl. Avoid having to pay back allowances afterwards.
Married and registered partners are considered allowance partners even if they do not live at the same address or one of them lives abroad.
Do you have an allowance partner living abroad? Your partner must also have a citizen service number (BSN). Without a BSN, your allowances partner will not be counted. You can apply for a BSN for your partner at one of 1 the 9 RNI counters in the Netherlands. Is that not possible? Use the form "Request citizen service number allowance partner abroad" in that case. You can download this on My Allowances or request it from the BelastingTelefoon Buitenland (International Tax Hotline) (+31 555 385 385).
In that case, you will not receive the right amount of allowance. If we mistakenly see you as a single parent, you will receive too much child budget. That means you will have to repay some of it later. On the other hand, you will receive too little care allowance if we do not include your partner.
No, there is no need to do that again. If your allowances partner appears on your allowances decision, the local authority and Belastingdienst/Toeslagen has properly received the registration.
To qualify for a care allowance, you must not be earning too much. The maximum income you can have is called the 'limit income' and differs for single people and for partners. This limit income varies from year to year. You are not eligible for care allowance if your income exceeds these limit incomes. To qualify for a care allowance, you must also not have too many assets. Such as savings. See toeslagen.nl for all the conditions.
An advance is an advance payment. You may have received too much allowance. Have you started earning more or got married, for example? If so, the amount of the allowance you are entitled to could change. Afterwards, you will receive the final calculation from Belastingdienst/Toeslagen. If you receive too much allowance, you have to pay back the excess amount. Avoid having to pay back your allowance by reporting changes in your situation as soon as possible.
Will you be earning more? Or are you moving to another country? In that case, you can stop your care allowance via the website my.toeslagen.nl (English and Dutch).
Do you have an independent living space with your own entrance door that can be locked? And do the rent and service charges not exceed €808.06? In that case, you might be entitled to housing benefit. You are entitled to housing benefit if you do not earn more than a certain income. The higher your income is, the less housing benefit you will receive. How high your income can be depends on the rent and the age and composition of your household. This concerns the total income you earn in a year. To qualify for housing benefit, must also not have too many assets. Such as savings. The income and assets of your allowance partner and co-occupant also count. See toeslagen.nl for all the conditions.
Have you started earning more or got married, for example? If so, the amount of the allowance you are entitled to could change. You might therefore have to pay the excess amount you received. The Tax Administration will notify you about this.
Important note! Will you be earning more? Or are you moving to another country? If so, you can stop your housing benefit via My Allowances at toeslagen.nl (English and Dutch).
Are you moving within the Netherlands? If so, this could affect your housing benefit. Always report a move to the municipality you will be living in. Next, check whether the conditions of a housing benefit still apply to your new home. You do not have to apply for housing benefit again. You do need to report your new rent after you have moved. You can do this once you are registered with the local authority at your new address.
Do you have children who need childcare when you go to work? If so, you will often be entitled to an allowance for the cost of childcare. Your child must be registered in a Dutch municipality at the same address as you. This requirement does not apply in cases of co-parenting, for example.
However, you will have to pay for some of the childcare yourself. That is the compulsory personal contribution.
Do you have a child under 18? And are you insured in the Netherlands? If so, you are entitled to child benefit until the child turns 18. The amount of child benefit depends on the child's age and your specific situation. Child benefit is paid every three months and is intended to cover part of the child's expenses. The Social Insurance Bank (SVB) decides whether you are eligible for child benefit, and they pay it. For more information on applying for child benefit, see: svb.nl/en/kinderbijslag/hoe-vraagd-u-kinderbijslag-aan/kinderbijslag-aanvragen.
Do you have a child under 18? And do you receive child benefit for that child? In some cases, you may also be entitled to a child budget. You usually do not have to apply for the child budget yourself. The Belastingdienst/Toeslagen will automatically notify you.
Does your child not live in the Netherlands but in another EU country (European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland) ? In that case, you can usually claim child benefit. Does your child or one of your children live in a country outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland? In that case, there is usually no entitlement, unless stated otherwise under a treaty.
